MY SRI LANKA

Ancient Stone Brid over Halpan Ela

Anuradhapura served as the original capital of Sri Lanka more than two thousand two hundred years ago. The road system was highly advanced during that time, connecting major routes to Trincomalee, Mannar, Jaffna, and the southern kingdoms from Anuradhapura. These roads were utilized not only by pedestrians but also by carts transporting goods for trade and commerce. As the road network expanded, the ancient rulers constructed robust bridges using granite slabs and pillars. Remnants of these bridges can be seen scattered across Malwathu Oya, Hal Pan Ela, Kandara Oya, Yan Oya, Kala Oya, and Deduru Oya.

The road that leads to the lesser-known Halpan Ela Gal Palama is situated near the Kuttam Pokuna (Twin Ponds). After traveling 3 km from Sangamitta Mawatha, you will arrive at the location where this ancient stone bridge spans the Halpan Ela. Continuing along the same route, you will eventually reach the more renowned Stone Bridge over the Mawathu Oya.
