MY SRI LANKA

Padalanchana Chethiya

The Padalanchana Chethiya, also known as Sila Chethiya and Digha Stupa, is located fifty meters southeast of Thuparama Dagoba. It was originally constructed by King Lagnatissa, the son of King Saddhatissa, and covers the footprint of Buddha.

According to the Mahavamsa, this site is one of the four places where all the Buddhas of this aeon have left their footprints. Kakusanndha, Konagamana, Kassapa, and Gouthama Buddhas have all visited this small island and left their footprints at this location. The Pali Mahabodhiwanmsa provides an account of these four Buddhas, stating that they meditated at four different spots on the island. After hallowing the site of the future Thuparama and preaching the dhamma, Kakusandha, the first Buddha of this kalpa, ascended into the air from the terrace named Ratanamalaka and returned to Jambudipa. The Sinhalese gloss explains that Ratanamalaka is currently the site of the main chethiya (stupa) in the shrine of the Footprints of the four Buddhas.
